Atlanta native Hugh Hawkins Howell Sr. (1888-1979) was a developer and attorney. He was chairman of the Democratic State Executive Committee during the 1930s. The road that extends from Georgia Highway 236 into Stone Mountain Park was named in his honor in the 1960s. Howell Lake is also named for him.
